Irish jewellery designer Tom Binns is truly genius, his faux-gem creations are unique, intricate and devastatingly beautiful works of art. From Vivenne Westwood beginnings, his collections have been infused with punk mentality ever since. The combination of vintage pearls, Swarovski crystals and repurposed antique jewels mixed with skulls, safety pins, crucifixes and sea glass create irreverent and achingly edgy pieces. Having said all that, his opinions regarding appropriation in the fashion industry leave me a little disappointed. I understand his frustration when his ideas are copied, however copying designs - or simply being influenced - seems like a natural cycle. The fact that people can buy beautiful clothes, be it couture or chainstore, is an argument for the flexibility and success of fashion, not an argument for exclusivity.
